Summer break, ep 1 · 2267 days ago

It’s now thursday of my first week off and nothing feels right. The house is quiet except for the awkward sound of the rats (babysitting) and perhaps the sound of only two keyboards hum away in the background. HQ is but dead. Jeff and I look at each other with a blank stare, boredom overcomes us. We sit quietly looking into our computers wondering what homework we have forgotten. You can hear the sigh under our breath as we lauch programs we use for homework, then realize that we have no need for them now that the quarter is over as we close them once again. I left SJ’s boredom for this.

I had been passing the time at home for the first weekend. Lounging about the sofa flipping thru the channels until my thumb hurt – tv really has gone down hill. My parents aren’t inclined to get the good channels, I wonder why they have cable to begin with (nascar). I tried to do what I did during winter break again – use the blockbuster freedom pass twice/three times a day, but I had seen everything, so that simply wouldn’t work. So I took some walks/skated around the area towing behind me my dog/sister. Got some great looks and even got stopped and had a chat with some amazing looking women (like that would ever happen in SF – oh wait I don’t have a cute little dog with me there either sigh). I had to get out, so I came home.

Got home, realized that unlike SJ the kitchen wasn’t full – but atleast I could have Oreo’s and milk for breakfast again. I continue to go for my walks exploring what lays west of us and the presido (which is rather tiring going up and down up and down) I saw the terminal the other day. Really an enjoyable film, the story shows amazing plot (afterall it really only happens inside a single building) and some of the humor is in rather good taste. I look forward to Michael Moore’s latest this friday, should be good if only to stir up some political converstation with a few strong biases.

At this rate, the third week of break will bring all sorts of new levels of boredom to my definition.

Schools Digital Gallery · 2275 days ago

While Jeff has numerous issues with it over at creatimation.net. I will reserve myself to just the amount/quality of student work on display. The work in the digital gallery is horrid take a look for yourself here. Some of it is untextured and unlit. Some of it is/never was portfolio quality in my mind. So why is it there? Perhaps our school isn’t producing quality work? – That simply isn’t so, Work done by the crew here at HQ could easily replace/fil the galery – and we are just a small fraction of school. Where are the scultpures by mattzilla/higgins – where are the character models. Not even all of the graduating students work is included. If I was applying for schools today and saw that gallery verus other schools – I would have never even filled out the application. It’s just that bad.

To continue, where is all the artwork? The gallery is so small.. why even have links to just to single pieces, why not just display them all thumbnailed on the first page. I could see the navigation if most of the students had multiple pieces up on display – but that simply is not so. Then as I stated on Jeff’s rant, why are the majors all jumbled up? With how much branded school does to seperate them all, why in the world do they relump them back together in the gallery. What bothers me the most is they didn’t even lump related majors together. While it would still annoy me I could buy into like game art and visual programing put together especially as the students in each program begin to work together. But Graphic Design and Animation, sure we both have color theory, and intro to blah classes together thats about where it stops.

At this point, I feel like the gallery is a slap to all the students at school that work hard to create amazing work, The gallery should be a place to highlight and reward our efforts, not the exact opposite. That’s what the gallery on the first floor has become, why shouldn’t the online one (a potential larger audience) be the same? If you’re not going to display the best, never mind worthy pieces why even have it?

Money in America · 2281 days ago

After a rather interesting discussion with Travis, I can’t but help chuckle at the thought of national debt. After all how can a country be the ‘richest’ and be what four or five trillion in debt? I can see the practical reason why it’s done however. After all if you’re in debt you can’t provide all services without increasing the problem, you get to save money because you’re not spending it, and at the end of the year you can ask for more to help ‘pay off’ the growing debt.

The benefits of being in debt clearly make sense from a capitalist point of view. It’s hard to see any way this national debt could hurt the GDP in any way. It’s easy to tell a concerned citizen “I’m sorry you don’t have national healthcare, but If we provided that what would become of our already large debt?” Or as a reason that the nasty pothole hasn’t been fixed, or why there is 40 kids crammed into a public classroom with but a single teacher. Being relieved of providing all of that is making a lot of people rich, not only the country. No free healthcare – buy ours. Don’t like public school – pay to come to ours. All the while we are asked to pay more in taxes to help provide these services or sustain current ones, in the hopes that it will soften the hit from our national ‘debt’.

If you buy into the idea/belief that this country really is too in debt to provide you with even ‘basic’ services it’s easy to just blame politicians for passing unbalanced budgets. The reason we don’t is that it would just prove that we’ve been making the horrible mistake of accepting all this crap all these years. That just gets me to thinking that the whole social acceptance of unbalanced budgets is ridiculous. Shouldn’t Americans consider one of politicians’ responsibilities to ensure they are only spending what they have to spend? If it’s too hard to do that, why not cut their salaries first to help the cause rather than education? I’m sure that if we treated them like the rest of the working class, who only get paid if they deliver the goods before the deadline, all these budget problems might just disappear. After all if they all lost part of their salary every day they were late with a balanced budget how often do you think that would happen?

What are your thoughts? Do you buy into the fact America is actually in debt? Are we lying that we are the richest country in the world? Is it the public’s fault for accepting un-balanced budgets?

Lord Stanley's Cup goes to Tampa, FL · 2283 days ago

I’ll admit, I wasn’t hoping for this outcome, rather my coach in Calgary, Daryl Sutter. Whom I still don’t believe deserved the treatment the sharks paid him last year after a two sub-par months. Amazing that you can’t do well without all your players, esp your goalie who missed the first month due to contract disputes. Sure the sharks, even with a new coach made it into the playoffs that year, but he had all his starters. But last night Calgary didn’t deserve it, nor work for it. They played some sloppy game and they go home empty handed because of it.

So for the most part it was a great series, deserving of people’s attention, games 4-6 were amazing. Least for D.Sutter there is always next year, and you can bet he will be back with a vengance.

Journal Migrated/Updated to Blogger! · 2285 days ago

I decided to ditch Jeff’s miniblog as it may be very cool for being so small, the 5k file size limit really was making for a lack of needed features, most importantly a way to easily keep track of the order/new journal entries – as it didn’t organize them by date, order created not even by filename. This lack of feature has forced me to update to blogger based journal. With the ability to update my blog with my instant message client (got to love miranda-im and it’s endless feature set) I think I will be very happy with my choice, it’s been weeks in research to come to this decision. btw.. updates are easily found all over the place today, I was a busy little beaver all night long.
